Happy one month birthday, Simon! It's already been a whole month since you came to live on the outside. A whole lot of people (me and Mommy included) have never been happier. Simon Joseph, you are one loved baby.
Despite looking like a two month old baby in the picture above, you were in fact just under two hours old when I took that picture. You and I had just gotten into our room, and Mommy was off getting some food for me, so it was just the two of us. Grandma Fisher was super excited to see that you were born already "fluffed out" and not too squished up like most newborns are. She only thought this because all the pictures we sent out that first day were of your sweet face and your kissable cheeks and not your skinny-minnie body and chicken legs. Sorry about that, you totally have my legs. (And my nose and eyes and whole face, but it's only the legs I'm apologizing for at this point.)
In our first month at home we've spent a lot of time hanging out as a family of three, getting to know each other. This is what we've learned about you so far.
You love to squish yourself up and pretend you're still in the womb, making you very compact.
When you sleep you often look like you're contemplating how lame we are, with all the time we spend sitting on the couch watching the Olympics. Hipster baby is SO OVER US.
You are super good at relaxing.
You already have quite a bit of attitude when you want to, though it is hard to catch on camera.
Both families are crazy in love with you, the first grandchild for both my parents and Mommy's parents. Grandma and Grandpa Fisher came to stay with us for five whole days, and I feel like I barely got to hold you in all that time. Last weekend you got to meet your Great Grandparents (on Mommy's side) along with the rest of the extended family on her side.

Four Generations - you, Mommy, Grammie, and Omi
You are very tolerant of Mama and her desire to make you a Packer fan for as long as possible before all these Chicago people here corrupt you into cheering for the Bears.
First preseason game of the year!
Ditto Mommy and her push to make you a Cubs fan. Maybe you'll get lucky and they'll win a World Series in your lifetime.
Since day one you've shown signs of becoming a thumb sucker. You found your thumb in the hospital at just a few hours old, and the lactation consultant we saw told us that is a sign of maturity. Advanced baby! Clearly you're a genius. (I'm ignoring the fact that as I write this you are laying next to me cooing at the back of the couch.)
In addition to being loved in a big way by all the people in your world, Ricky has taken to guarding you through the day. Or guarding me while I'm holding you, I'm not sure which. Twice he has jumped up on my while I'm nursing you to sit on my chest, snuggled up against you.
You're becoming more alert and showing us your pretty blue eyes, you're staying awake for longer periods, and you're learning to look at books and at the wall decals by your changing table.
You still get the hiccups every day, just like you did in utero, but they rarely bother you. You're a great eater now that you've gotten the hold of nursing, and you hardly ever fuss. I keep telling people it's just because you're too little to be fussy yet and it's coming, but I'm beginning to think you're just a pretty laid back little guy. I fully expect you to scream for at least 24 hours straight now that I admitted that on the Internet, however. (Lesson: don't talk about the no-hitter!)
You are incredibly busy, waiving your arms and legs around anytime you're lying on a blanket. When we do tummy time you try very hard to scoot away, and three times in a row today you've rolled yourself over front to back. The perks of being a super skinny baby - I'm told that skill will disappear when you gain a bit more weight and then re-appear at a more appropriate developmental level, which is good as I'm not ready for a mobile one-month-old, because COME ON.
Welcome to the world, Simon Fisher, my little Si-Fi (thanks to Holly for the awesome nickname). You are the best thing that has ever happened to our family, hands down. I can't wait to see how you continue to grow and learn and change in the weeks, months, and years to come. I love you more than you'll ever know.
Love always,
Mama
